Kelly’s Journals….
Documenting “The Experience”

WLTI

The few days that were spent in Washington, were the most memorable of my SkillsUSA experience so far. I was able to meet with my Congressional Leaders to advocate career and technical education. I loved touring D.C. and visiting all of the monuments. It was a huge history lesson, but it was fun!

All of the girls on our officer team decided to buy matching I Love D.C. hoodies. That was the best idea we had all week…it was freezing!! I brought shorts because I thought it was going to be hot. I was definitely wrong.

I was also able to earn the National Statesman Award for the second year in a row. To earn the award, you have to prove your SkillsUSA and government knowledge, attend sessions, visit with Congressional leaders, write a couple of essays, and pass an interview. I felt very accomplished by the end of the week.

My favorite part of the trip was the SkillsUSA social. The reason it was my favorite was because it was hilarious to watch Jarrod attempt to dance.

Fall Leadership Conference

After months of preparation, Fall Leadership Conference finally arrived. The pre-session music, slideshow, and light show created an exciting ambience throughout the auditorium. Nothing can describe how it felt to walk down the isle when they called my name. We had worked so hard preparing for this conference that we felt extremely accomplished when it was over. I must say, the highlight of this trip was seeing my friends from my school earn their statesman award. I was so proud of them!

CTSO Winter Training Camp

This was the first time my fellow officer friends saw my hair straight. They did not recognize me. We attended several training sessions in which we further developed our public speaking skills. We also went out for pizza and had a dance contest. We danced to M.C. Hammer’s infamous, “Can’t Touch This”. It was truly a beautiful moment.

Dillard

This was the most relaxed meeting of the year. The Dillard House made sure we always had great food. From fresh cheese to home-made brownies, we were always taken care of.

My friends really encouraged me to conquer my fear of skiing (I had previously run into a fence) and I’m so glad they did. It was wonderful to dominate the bunny slopes. SkillsUSA truly does bring out the champion within.

July, 2007

This past week at nationals was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed every moment… even eating Chinese food every day. I made so many friends from other states and I made even more from Georgia. My favorite memory is dancing with Harris County at the Champions Festival. They really taught me some new moves!

Every time I go to Nationals, my love for SkillsUSA grows stronger. Just to be a part of the sea of red blazers is worth the trip.

June 10, 2007

This past weekend, I traveled to Covington, GA for the State Officer training.  It was so cool because we were able to spend time with other State Officers from other organizations.  We are currently in competition with each other for a trip to Six Flags!
We had to go through a very difficult obstacle course.  At the end of the course was a long tube with a huge mud pit underneath it.  We had to crawl across it without falling.  This would have been easy if they hadn’t greased up the tube with lube and sprayed us with a water hose.  I was the last one to go across the tube and I had no idea what I was doing!  Everyone from all of the other organizations surrounded me and kept cheering, “Kelly, Kelly, Kelly!”  The SkillsUSA State Officers were also cheering for me.  Then Jarrod reached out and pulled me across.  I felt like I had conquered the world!

This was a bonding experience of a lifetime and now our officers are closer then ever!  I am so excited and I can’t wait until Nationals!
