Union County High School SkillsUSA Members and Teacher of the Year Help Injured Student

Last month Glenn Pyle, a Senior and SkillsUSA member was hurt when his truck hydroplaned off a mountain and landed about 40 feet down. When Mr. Hayes’ class discovered that Glenn was coming home from the hospital soon, his construction class went to work building a handicap ramp. Within days of his arrival from the hospital, Mr. Hayes and his students installed the handicap ramp at Glenn's home. Glenn was happy to see not only the ramp but his friends from school as well! This project would not have been possible without a great deal of teamwork on the part of the student members at Union County High School. The atmosphere of teamwork and commitment to community service has been instilled in these members through the leadership of their advisor, Michael Hayes. Over the last several years Mr. Hayes has inspired his students to give back to the community and school system through activities such as building swings for the local park and adding a truly special touch to the elementary school libraries where young students are transported to a cabin in the woods for reading time and even to Clifford’s Dog House to hear a good book. These are just a few of the ways Mr. Hayes has encouraged his students to excel in school and in life and these are some of the reasons why he has been named Union County High School’s Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to the Union County High School SkillsUSA Chapter on their continued success!

Cross Keys HS SkillsUSA partners with other student clubs and Newell Rubbermaid
Hands on Atlanta partnered with Newell Rubbermaid to provide a day of school beautification and clean up at Cross Keys High School on Saturday, October 3. Cross Keys High School SkillsUSA members took advantage of the opportunity to work side-by-side with Newell Rubbermaid and other school clubs on the school beautification project. We cleaned shrubbery, assembled shelves and painted the school. SkillsUSA members met after the clean up and have decided to apply for the Lowe’s Campus Improvement Grant. If approved, they plan to continue with the beautification project by painting, planting shrubbery, building and painting new benches and building a gazebo in the courtyard.

Stephens County High School SkillsUSA/ Cosmetology Chapter Supports Kickin' IT for Breast Cancer
The Stephens County High School SkillsUSA/ Cosmetology Chapter decided to take on Kickin' IT for Breast Cancer as one of their community service projects this fall. Kickin' IT is a group that provides mammograms for Stephens County women who have no insurance. Last year they were able to provide 80 mammograms, and the best thing about Kickin' IT is all the proceeds stay in Stephens County. Cosmetology students sold black T-shirts with a pink logo for Kickin' IT along with a bake sale and ribbon sales were able to present Kickin IT a check for $1,300.

Picture includes Melissa Retkofsky and Caitlin Chastain along with breast cancer survivor and chairmen of the committee, Connie Worley.
Community Service Benefits Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

G. W. Carver’s SkillsUSA Chapter had eight students volunteer at the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk held on the 3rd of October. The students helped conduct face painting, popped popcorn, and made cotton candy, along with flavored ice for the participants. The foundation raised a total of $50,000 due to the walkers and not having to pay anyone to run the concessions for them.
