National Leadership and Skills Conference 2010

The SkillsUSA Championships, held in Kansas City, Mo., took place June 22-25, 2010, as part of the SkillsUSA 46th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), a showcase of career and technical education students. During the week, more than 5,600 outstanding career and technical education students—all state contest winners competed hands-on in 96 different trade, technical and leadership fields. For the second year in a row, Georgia ranked 4th in the nation, in medallion count, only behind Florida, Ohio and Texas. Competitors brought home 23 medallions and 27 top scorer positions, indicating an increase over last year’s placement. A pinnacle achievement for SkillsUSA members as part of the new Work Force Ready System is the awarding of Skill Point Certificates. Earning a Skill Point Certificate is a significant achievement that documents a student’s knowledge and abilities within a certain area. This criterion is developed and endorsed by industry representatives. 58 Georgia students earned Skill Point Certificates, signifying that they achieved technical competencies and proficiency on the national level.

Union County High School Celebrates Student's Success

Mrs. Silvey and Mr. Cannon met with Union County High School SkillsUSA Advisor Michael Hayes, Heath Care Science Teacher Sandra Cook, and the members of the UCHS SkillsUSA Health Knowledge Bowl Team, Alex Miller, Jordan Grizzle, Haley Grimes, and Nolan Burks.

Mr. Hayes stated that, “It was a privilege to have Mrs. Silvey and Mr. Cannon on the UCHS campus today. It was a blast sitting down together as a group to talk over lunch. As we were sitting around the table eating, it was exciting to hear our students discuss their future plans, college choices, as well as their AP class woes. While the students swapped stories with Ms Silvey and Mr. Cannon, I thought about what they had accomplished in just one year as SkillsUSA Health Knowledge Bowl Team Members at both our Region II and State competitions. Our time together quickly passed as we finished our luncheon. The personal medical challenges which Alex is facing will remain in our hearts and prayers as we go our separate ways. I wish each team member the best as they prepare for their future.”

Health Care Science Teacher, Sandra Cook had these comments to add, “ I enjoyed the opportunity to meet Mrs. Silvey and Mr. Cannon and getting to know them better. We had an enjoyable lunch while discussing the successes of the Health Knowledge Bowl Team members this year as well as their future plans. The conversation flowed and time passed quickly. I am very proud of the members of the Health Knowledge Bowl team and their accomplishments this year. I wish them the best as they pursue their future plans. I will never forget how these students worked together to accomplish great things in such little time.”

Mrs. Silvey had this to share, “While heading to the mountains of north Georgia is always a treat it is definitely the people that make it special. It is always an honor to sit down with our student members and hear of the many wonderful activities that they are involved in, their plans for the future and how being involved in a Career and Technical Student Organization influenced them and their decisions. Our members and advisors provide us with the best insight as to how we can grow stronger, areas for improvement and activities that will benefit everyone. The members at Union County High School are focused and have a solid vision for their future. It is evident that their focus and vision is a direct result of the positive influence their advisors have had on their lives.”
