Chris Martin in Dubai

 

Chris Martin, 2007 SkillsUSA Georgia Pin Design Winner and graduate from Union Grove High School is preparing to spend a month in Dubai. Chris was a member of SkillsUSA for four years and was on the Quiz Bowl team in 2005 that placed second in the nation. This summer he will be the drafter with of a team of architects from Rosser International, a world renowned architecture company with offices located in Atlanta.

Kendrick HS Community Outreach Program

 

The Kendrick High School SkillsUSA chapter has been holding free computer training classes for the community called Click Into the Future. The project started on March 12 with training classes for children at the Mildred L. Terry Library. SkillsUSA members showed them how to set up email accounts, work in PowerPoint and search the internet.

Harris County Community Outreach

In response to concerns from parents and educators, Harris County High School Healthcare Science SkillsUSA  students recently planned a very important project at Harris County Carver Middle School.  The concern involved the threat of MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) and other germs that might cause infection.  The students along with their advisor, Phyllis Johnson, coordinated the implementation of “Infection Protection.”. . .

DHS Students Return to Elementary School

 

SkillsUSA and the upper level Video Production classes at Dalton High School have received a grant from the United Way of Northwest Georgia to implement a MLK project. The MLK Day of Service grant is an annual grant given to groups to use for expenses related to the project activities.  Three components make up the project: a service project, service learning, and intergenerational dialogue.

Dekalb HS of Technology North Celebrates Veterans Day

 

SkillsUSA members at DeKalb High School of Technology North celebrated Veterans Day on November 9, 2007 by having Lt. Col. Twala Mathis of the U.S. Army speak during a Veterans Day Assembly.  Lt. Col. Mathis is the first African American female to command a recruiting battalion on the east coast and the second African American female to command a recruiting battalion in the nation.

Dekalb HS of Technology North Winter Retreat

SkIn the month of December, DeKalb High School of Technology North SkillsUSA had its first annual SkillsUSA Winter Retreat for new members at the FFA Camp in Covington, Georgia.  SkillsUSA members that attended the Fall Leadership Conference in October presented workshops in team-building, leadership development and SkillsUSA awareness.

Kendrick HS Conducts Operation Cards4Heros 

The Kendrick High School SkillsUSA chapter conducted Operation Cards4Heroes from November 9-December 4, 2007.  Chapter members collected Christmas cards that were sent to troops deployed overseas.  Laketa Lewis, junior, and LeArmie James, senior, created holiday cards and printed them in their graphic communications class.  Students were asked to sign the cards or make cards during lunch on November 9 in honor of Veterans Day.
